Hi everyone. I’m still alive. Moving sucks. California is nice.

“Certainly we want to protect our children from new and painful experiences that are beyond their emotional comprehension and that intensify anxiety; and to a point we can prevent premature exposure to such experiences. That is obvious. But what is just as obvious — and what is too often overlooked — is the fact that from their earliest years children live on familiar terms with disrupting emotions, fear and anxiety are an intrinsic part of their everyday lives, they continually cope with frustrations as best they can. And it is through fantasy that children achieve catharsis. It is the best means they have for taming Wild Things.” — Maurice Sendak, 1964 (via psychotherapy)

I want to buy some land

After driving through so much wide-open land to get here, I started thinking about how much I’d like to own some of my own someday.

Not to do anything fancy with - probably just build a modest house where my family could come to relax and get away from the world.

Think about it though: it’s your land. If you buy enough, you can’t see anyone else. It’s basically like you don’t have neighbors. You can do whatever you want.

Watching Friday Night Lights while cooped up in a hotel room every night certainly doesn’t help, either.

To clarify

I try to deal with change well, but it’s never easy for me. I like to venture outside my comfort zone in baby steps - though there have been quite a few times in my life when I’ve jumped in with both feet, as I’m doing now.

I understand that I’m lucky as hell for the opportunities I have in front of me - and I plan to take advantage of all of them. I think it’ll just take a little while to get over the shock of it. All this happened so quickly that I didn’t fully process it until I’m sitting alone in a hotel room, 1500 miles and one week away from a completely different life.

So, to clarify, California - you seem cool, and I want to get to know you. But before I do that, I’m going to take a couple of days to get over Oklahoma and Texas. After that, I’ll be ready to see what you’re all about.

Things I’ve learned about California

I’m sure that in a few days/weeks all this will go away (I hope). For some reason I feel the need to catalog what I’m thinking.
